01 — APPLICATION & API SECURITY
Application and API penetration testing.
We examine how your application actually behaves when someone tries to step outside the paths it was built for — and explain which weaknesses matter to your business.
WHAT WE ASSESS
Testing is informed by the application’s architecture, roles and functionality. Automated tooling is used where it adds value, but most of the work is hands-on analysis of how features, data and permissions relate.
An engagement can cover web applications, REST and GraphQL APIs, mobile back-ends and integrations between systems.
TYPICAL RISK AREAS
- Authorization and access control
Can a user reach other users’ data, or functions intended for another role?
- Authentication and session handling
Login flows, password reset, tokens, session lifetime and multi-factor authentication.
- Business logic
Flows that can be abused out of order, with tampered values or repeated requests.
- Input validation
Injection flaws, unsafe deserialization, file handling and unexpected input.
- Data exposure
API responses that reveal more than needed, error messages and sensitive data in logs or clients.
Scoping
- Which applications, environments and API surfaces are included.
- Number of roles and test accounts required.
- Whether testing runs in test, staging or production.
- Access to documentation, API specifications or source code (grey/white box).
What you receive
- An executive summary for leadership and decision-makers.
- Technically described findings with reproducible steps where appropriate.
- An assessment of impact and conditions for exploitation.
- Prioritized remediation guidance for the engineering team.
- Retesting of fixed findings when included in scope.
PROCESS
- 01
Scope
Establish objectives, asset boundaries, access, constraints and rules of engagement.
- 02
Test
Perform structured testing, combining suitable automation with hands-on investigation.
- 03
Validate
Verify findings, assess real-world implications and gather appropriate supporting evidence.
- 04
Report & Retest
Deliver prioritized findings, remediation guidance and follow-up validation where agreed.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Do we need to share source code?
No, but it can make testing more efficient and thorough. We discuss the trade-offs during scoping.
Can you test in production?
It is possible with clear rules of engagement. We often recommend a production-like test environment to reduce the risk of disruption.
How long does an assessment take?
It depends on the size and complexity of the application. After a scoping conversation we provide an effort estimate.
